Directions & Perspective

Posted on April 14th, 2012 by Viveca in New York Stories

For a while now I’ve been eying some of the brightly patterned back packs my students carry. Today one girl let me check hers for tags, but I couldn’t find a brand. I asked her whether she knew where she got it, and to my surprise she said she did. I asked where. She’s in first grade. She didn’t remember the name of the store, but she gave me very specific directions how to get there: “you walk out of the school, and take a left. At the first corner, you make another left, and then you cross the street. Then mommy hails a taxi, and it takes you to the store.” Helpful.
