What?

One time when I was visiting Al he asked me to help him deal with some bureaucratic VA stuff. He often wants help with that kind of thing. This time he wanted to know how to get a new pair of glasses and hearing aids. He said he was entitled to them, once a year, and he wanted to follow through.

I asked him about his prescription, and he insisted he needed an eye exam, and then I realized, “Wait a minute, Al, hearing aids? You’re not wearing hearing aids right now, and you can hear me just fine. There’s nothing wrong with your ears. You don’t need hearing aids.”

Al looked at me like I was an idiot as he explained, “I know my rights. I get hearing aids. I want them because they’re free!”
