antenna

Portabella

Here is a photo essay I wrote in 2003 about my cat.

fat cat on floor
My cat is lithe and athletic.
fat cat on floor

She lies on the floor,

fat cat on bed
or sometimes on the bed.
fat cat on floor near bed
Sometimes she lies on the floor near the bed.
cat with food
Like many cats, she eats cat food.
cat in litter box
Then she gets rid of it.
fighter cat
She tries to act tough,
cat on rollerboard
especially when guarding a rollerboard,
lithe cat
but it's hard to take her seriously.

That’s the end of that essay.

In 2001, I wrote a serious post about her poor health and her previous owner’s abandonment. It’s not worth repeating (unlike this masterpiece), but it did include two gorgeous Polaroids of her by Mark Robbins. Here they are.

In these photos, her belly was shaved for surgery, and she had a feeding tube “antenna,” through which I plunged food and medicine directly into her esophagus to force-feed her. She survived that illness but didn’t survive my 2006 move to Brooklyn and died in November of that year.
